| Controversy Surrounds Vijay's Iftar Party: Fatwa Released in Response |
Actor and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president Thalapathy Vijay is facing fresh controversy after a fatwa was issued against him by a prominent Muslim cleric. The All India Muslim Jamat (AIMJ), through its president Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, released the fatwa urging Muslims not to support the actor-politician. The move comes in response to allegations that Vijay invited inappropriate guests—including gamblers and alcohol consumers—to an Iftar party he hosted, and that he has negatively portrayed Muslims in some of his films.
Maulana Razvi, while addressing the media, claimed that Vijay’s past actions in cinema contributed to harmful stereotypes against the Muslim community. “He formed a political party and is trying to show cordial relations with Muslims. But in his films, he has depicted Muslims as terrorists and troublemakers,” the cleric alleged.
The Iftar event, hosted in Chennai, was meant to showcase inclusivity and community outreach. However, according to Razvi, the presence of individuals with questionable reputations undermined the sanctity of the religious occasion. “Gamblers and people who consume liquor were invited to the Iftar. This has angered the Sunni Muslim community in Tamil Nadu,” he added.
Razvi said the fatwa was issued in direct response to concerns raised by members of the Muslim community in the state. “The request for a fatwa came from Sunni Muslims in Tamil Nadu. Based on their appeal, I advised that Muslims should not support or associate with actor Vijay,” he said, holding a hard copy of the fatwa for public display.
This development adds fuel to ongoing political speculation about Vijay’s relationship with the Muslim community. It follows recent reports alleging that his party, TVK, had sought Y-category security from the central government citing potential threats from Muslim groups—allegations that TVK has strongly denied.
VCK spokesperson Vanniarasu had earlier claimed that Vijay’s portrayal of Muslims in films like Kaththi and Beast may have sparked backlash and contributed to the perceived security threats. “He showed Muslims in poor light in those movies. It’s no surprise if there's some anger within the community,” he said.
In contrast, TVK and its ally, the Tamil Nadu Muslim League, dismissed these allegations as politically motivated. They accused the ruling DMK and its allies of attempting to isolate the Muslim electorate from TVK by framing these narratives.
The controversy has placed Vijay, a beloved figure in Tamil cinema transitioning into full-time politics, in a challenging position. While he seeks to appeal to a broad voter base, including minorities, the resurfacing of past film portrayals and the recent Iftar backlash could hinder his outreach efforts.
As Tamil Nadu’s political landscape heats up in the run-up to elections, the fatwa and surrounding discourse raise questions about the intersection of cinema, politics, and religious sentiments. Vijay’s next moves—whether clarification, outreach, or damage control—will be closely watched by both supporters and critics as he navigates this sensitive chapter of his political journey.
