Fatwa Fallout: TVK's Muslim Outreach Questioned Amid Iftar Party Controversy

Tamil actor and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party president Vijay has found himself at the center of controversy after a fatwa was issued against him by a prominent Muslim cleric. Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, president of the All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ), released the religious edict citing alleged disrespect towards Islamic traditions.

The fatwa was triggered by an Iftar party hosted by Vijay, where, according to Maulana Razvi, individuals known for gambling and consuming alcohol were present. “He may have started a political party and tried to connect with Muslims, but his past actions—including how Muslims have been portrayed in his films—cannot be ignored,” said Maulana Razvi in a media statement.

Razvi alleged that Vijay’s previous films, including Kaththi and Beast, depicted Muslims in a negative light, associating them with terrorism. He added that inviting non-practicing individuals to an Iftar party goes against the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan and has deeply offended sections of the Muslim community in Tamil Nadu.

The fatwa calls on Muslims not to support or associate with Vijay, urging them to critically assess the actor-turned-politician’s intentions. “Sunni Muslims in Tamil Nadu are angered by these repeated acts. My response to their concerns is clear—Vijay should not be trusted,” Razvi asserted.

The controversy comes weeks after political opponents claimed that TVK had sought Y-category security from the central government, allegedly citing potential threats from Muslim groups. Critics accused the party of fear-mongering and attempting to portray Muslims as hostile, in an effort to manipulate public sentiment.

Reacting to the controversy, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Vanniarasu said, “Vijay has shown Muslims in a bad light in his films. Now, to secure himself politically, he is trying to gain sympathy through religious gestures. But the truth cannot be hidden.”

However, leaders from TVK and its ally, the Tamil Nadu Muslim League, dismissed the allegations as baseless. They accused rival parties of orchestrating a campaign to alienate Muslim voters from Vijay ahead of upcoming elections. “This is a clear attempt by political adversaries to create division. Vijay has always respected all communities,” a TVK spokesperson stated.

The Iftar event in question was held at YMCA Grounds in Chennai on March 8, where Vijay was seen wearing a skullcap, offering namaz, and breaking the fast alongside attendees. What was meant to be a show of communal harmony has now become a flashpoint of political and religious tension.

With this fatwa now making national headlines, it remains to be seen how Vijay and TVK will navigate the fallout. Observers believe the incident could have a significant impact on the party's image, especially among minority communities.
